There’s no excuse for not being prepared for disaster. You can debate the likelihood of world ending devastation, but you cannot question the occurrence of natural disasters. They happen, they take place frequently, and they often bring about disruption of utilities and food resources for days or weeks. Exactly how long can you and your family live without water and food? How will you stay safe and warm? How would you provide emergency care in the event of a trauma? These are all things you have to be concerned about and preparing for.

Establishing A Food Supply When Planning for Disaster

It doesn’t require a lot of extra cash to establish a stockpile of food designed to carry you through a natural disaster. You aren’t aiming to gather enough to live on for several years, just a few days while the immediate danger exists. The right foods to purchase in readiness for disaster are the ones that survive for months in dry storage. Avoid any foods that require refrigeration either for storage or after opening. Don’t forget to rotate your stockpile often to utilize the products that are nearing their expiration dates and replace them with fresh products.

How To Keep Water In Planning For Disaster

Water is the primary part of a survival kit. You can’t live without it. You can do without fizzy drinks, coffee, tea or juice, however you won’t endure without fresh, clean water. Don’t depend on plain tap water being obtainable when preparing for disaster. Even though you may live in a town where clean drinking water is piped through your home, a natural disaster might disrupt service or even worse, pollute the water supply. If you live in a rural area where a well is your source of household water and you have no manually operated pump outside, a power failure will terminate your pump and cut off your supply.

You can only live for Three days without water, and after 1 day severe dehydration sets in and causes extreme harm to your organs. It is necessary to have sufficient drinking water to look after yourself and your family in the event of even minor disasters. Always have at the very least one gallon of water per day for each member of your family on hand. It is a good idea to plan for enough food and water for a full week. Electrical outages resulting from tropical storms usually last for 3 to 7 days and it’s advisable to begin getting ready for disaster before it hits. Don’t ever hold off until the event occurs. Shops will sell out of the most basic items in hours, sometimes even minutes and there will be no water, food or other survival items available.

Some other items to include in your kit while preparing for disaster are quilts as well as a first aid kit to attend to any injuries from rubble or tumbles. Always keep plenty of batteries and flashlights in your kit and don’t forget to include a non-electric can opener. An additional item that is beneficial is a basic whistle. It will let you signal for help. Include garbage bags and moist towelettes in your disaster kit while preparing for disaster so that you can remain clean as well as keep the area sanitary.

area 51

Area 51 is the nickname given to a U.S. military base, which supports the development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems. Popularly, believed to be a hideout for Alien activity. Located at 83 miles north of Las Vegas. It is a 6×10 mile block of land situated on the southern shore of Groom Lake.

Since its inception citizens have claimed to view UFO sightings and heard strange, rumbling noises. Yet, the government denies the existence of Area 51. Rather, it emphasizes the area used to serve as a site for military bombings.

During World War II the Groom Lake was used for bombing and artillery practice, but was abandoned until April 1955, when Lockheed’s Skunk Works team selected the location as an ideal testing grounds for forthcoming U-2 spy plane. The base has seven runways including one that now appears to be closed. The closed runway 14R/32L, with a total length of 7,100 m is the longest without any stop-way. The other runways include two asphalt runways with a length of 3,700 m and 1,600 m respectively. And, the remaining four are located on the salt lake.

Since the paranormal occurrences at this location, it has become the subject of curiosity. Many documents and articles have been written about the place. People in hope to turn the rumors true flock outside the complex hoping to capture some alien activity in their camera lens.

The base does not appear on public U.S. government maps and the USGS topographic map shows the long-disused Groom Mine. The area is restricted for both civilians and general military air traffic. Radar stations guard the area and any unauthorized activity is instantly noticed and apprehended with stringent laws. Unauthorized personnel from the military are expelled if caught strolling in the restricted surroundings of Groom’s airspace.

Nevada’s state government, acknowledging the potential of the folklore surrounding the base has renamed the section of State Route 375 near Area 51 “The Extraterrestrial Highway” in hopes of generating revenue from tourism. Area 51 has become the focus of UFO and conspiracy theories. These theories include:

-The storage, examination, and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft with its occupants at Roswell.

-Manufacturing of aircrafts based on alien technology.

-Joint undertakings with extraterrestrials.

-The development of exotic energy weapons for weather control.

-The development of time travel and teleportation technology.

-The development of unique propulsion systems related to the Aurora Program.

-Activities related with the Majestic 12 organization often referred as one world government.

These conspiracy theories have catapulted Area 51 as a notorious, paranormal activity site in popular culture, specifically in the area of science fiction. Many films and television programs focus on capturing the essence of these theories marked as fictious by the government.

Still several people have claimed knowledge of events supporting Area 51 conspiracy theories. Bob Lazar, who was contracted to work with alien spacecraft that was in the possession of government in 1989.

Similarly, an interview conducted with a 71 year old mechanical engineer who was a former employee at the site during 1950s, claimed to work on a “flying disc simulator” which had been based on a disc originating from a crashed extraterrestrial craft and was used to train US Pilots. He also claimed to have worked with an extraterrestrial being named “J-Rod” and described as a “telepathic translator.”

Camping In Minimalist Form

I love camping as it allows us to get away from all the things that keep us in our materialistic lifestyles. The problem is that those materialistic things are marketed to us, the minimalists. Think about the last time you have gone camping and actually roughed it? That is what I thought, NEVER! Fact is most of us go camping and end up lugging all the “necessities” with us. We end up setting in the great outdoors surrounded by all of the luxuries we were hoping to escape. The truth is when it comes to the minimalist camping lifestyle allow yourself space to explore what it is like to go without. Prove to campers that over-packing is over rated and with the great outdoors being a minimalist is the only way to explore nature.

First things first, it is important that you remember camping is all about roughing it. When exploring the great outdoors consider adapting what nature offers to you and make so with it. The comforts of home are increasingly cumbersome when it comes to exploring nature. Don’t become the camper only interested in the latest gear. Be the camper that doesn’t get overwhelmed when they walk in to the camping retailer outlets. When camping camp with minimalistic expectations. Minimalist never consider walking around with more than they absolutely need. Extra gear to a camper who is truly in it for the experience is just clutter and waste.

Being a minimalist camper allot yourself a ten pound bag. More than that is an overkill. Your bag should only carry the bare minimum that is needed for you to be comfortable. In it pack clothing, extra shoes, bathing needs and anything you absolutely require. The basic rule in minimalist camping is that if you can’t pack it up in five minutes and carry it more than five minutes without wanting to set it down you have packed too much and you must lighten your load.

The next thing you need to consider is what you will need to survive comfortably at a campsite. Remember you need to keep in mind what you are able to carry in. As far as sleeping accommodations consider the size of the tent that you absolutely need. Only take what you need to sleep comfortably. You don’t need space for living and eating etc. As well as a tent to support the number of people sleeping you may also want to consider bringing a tarp along for incidentals. Keeping supplies dry is as important as keeping yourself dry.

When it comes to sleeping you will need one sleeping bag per person. If you are considering packing only a lightweight sleeping bag make sure that you have packed layers for sleeping clothing. Speaking of clothing, consider the fact that camping is about the experience and not what you are wearing. Consider wearing the same outfit more than once. When utilizing this technique it is important to use deodorant as well as layers of clothing to change as the temperatures change. Underwear can be reused with a quick cleansing using the soap and water or a river and they can dry in the sun.

Cooking and finding food is a bit more complex with minimalist camping. One small stove burner, propane and pan is really all you need to survive in the great outdoors. This along with a survival knife, some paracord and fire starter will prepare one heck of a meal. Consider packing some dry food goods as well as some cans of food, this along with the food that you hunt or fish for is the perfect combination for camping.

It is amazing what you don’t need when you camp. Camping is all about the experience and enjoying everything nature has to offer. It is important that you realize that survivalists have lived years without the conveniences that we now enjoy. Consider the minimalist approach on your next camping trip.

5 Weird Energy Sources

In our never ending quest for energy sources, there have been remarkable scientific breakthroughs. According to Enmax Calgary, renewable energy usage has increased about 10 percent in the past couple years. Here are some alternative energy resources that are being tapped and some that well could be, even if they are a little bit on the odd side.

Algae

Algae has several beneficial uses that extend beyond feeding fish and other aquatic life. There have been studies done that have shown that the lipid oil found in algae not only has health benefits for humans, it can also be used as fuel.

The biggest challenge facing lipid oil as a renewable energy source is the large amount of product that would be need to be harvested. Large scale use is something to look at down the road, but for now, it can be used on a smaller scale.

Electric Eels

As odd as it may sound, an electric eel in Japan was hooked up to a set of Christmas lights. An electric eel is capable of a jolt of electricity of 440v. While this isn’t going to power your house any time soon, imagine having a tank of them ready to light up your annual holiday decorations or even an outdoor lamp that provides some light for a late night picnic.

Your Nightly Leftovers and Food Scraps

There are companies using leftover food like fruit peels and coffee grounds to create anaerobic digestion to create powerful gases. These gases are being harnessed to produce electricity.

Food that is often headed for the landfill is now being used to power small towns and houses. The future will continue to get even brighter with the ever increasing use of these gases, giving us near perfect renewable, sustainable power generation.

Sound Waves

We know that vibrations and sound waves can generate piezoelectricity. This is caused by harnessing a sound wave by putting some objects into mechanical stress. At present, it looks like this type of power is only useful for generating small amounts of electricity for uses such as charging a cell phone or small battery. However, as research grows and companies find ways to harness this power, we may see houses and small towns powered through this method.

Chocolate

Yes, everyone’s favorite food, chocolate can be used to produce energy. A UK company fed leftover waste from it’s chocolate factory and added it to e coli bacteria. The combination of the two created hydrogen. Hydrogen is a clean burning fuel with only one by-product: water. The fats in chocolate were also recently utilized to power a race car. This biofuel byproduct got the car up to 130 mph on the track. A New Hampshire-based company even started using cocoa beans to be converted into biofuels. They began taking what were originally waste products and turned them into new power source.
The future of alternative power generating methods is bright and continues to grow. As the dependence on fossil fuels begins to dwindle, companies and individuals are finding new methods. Some have been around for years and others are strange, shots in the dark.
